We are taking that you own minimum some camera like Sony A68 and mount 135mm lens. Weight of such with your hands will go over one KG load. They are simply heavy cameras not light camera.
As most of the digital cameras of these days has some video recording facility, a tripod with classic fluid video head often attracts the owners with any type of camera. It is too common for the DSLR owners to jump to buy some tripod from $7 to $100 and later learn from the mistake. The cheap under hundred dollar tripods are basically designed for loading light cameras or mobile phone cameras or light video cameras. Sony and China company has no huge difference at that price range. Table top tripod, pocket tripod – all essentially not designed to handle a DSLR.
The low end tripods are dangerous – they can fall with camera. Furthermore their video head will not deliver a jerky style on movies. Below $400, all purpose heavy tripods for DSLR practically does not exist. The cost of manufacturing three well balanced legs is huge.
