In the year 2016, we saw cloud strategies truly begin to evolve. In the early days of cloud computing, most of the enterprises were simply migrating their applications to the cloud environment in order to lighten their on-premise IT load. With time, more organizations are taking multi cloud strategy. It is possibly obvious that unless explained, the key phrase multi cloud remains dark to many readers. What Is Multi Cloud?

Multi cloud is not any technical phrase but a set of words to describe cumulative action. For example, any simple website may concurrently use different cloud providers for infrastructure (IaaS, Hosting), CDN (SaaS, Storage), DNS (SaaS, Hosting), transactional email (SaaS, Hosting) from different providers instead of the main hosting company, or may use multiple infrastructure (IaaS, Hosting) from different providers. That heterogeneous usage is the key concept behind Multi Cloud.

With time, the real usage of Multi Cloud has been widened and included using different infrastructure providers for different workloads or deploying a single workload load balanced across multiple providers (active-active) or deploy a single workload on one provider with a backup on another (active-passive).

The reason to use services from different providers is to make the operating cost lower at the same time get specialised features. Of course we can integrate SendGrid transactional email with WordPress using their WordPress Plugin. That WordPress can be hosted on cloud server, dedicated server or any other. But the plugin will do more than the desired action of sending email, it can show statistics within WordPress. This is very basic example of modern way of using multi cloud integrated with API. The provider (SendGrid in this case) also having an advantage – so, many WordPress users with their plugin are not pointing browser to their website’s dashboard which is decreasing SendGrid’s unnecessary resource consumption. When resource consumption is decreasing, cost also decreasing. This is the basic behind multi cloud.

Multi cloud approach facilities to deploy websites and applications with services from diverse cloud providers which clearly reduces dependency on single provider and hence lessen the chance of vendor lock-in. This approach leverage usage of the most advantageous offer available in the market and switching between providers to avail these offers, help to build hybrid cloud infrastructure even with cheap dedicated servers.
