As many closed source Messaging App’s clients are Free Software (they do it to fool a bit aware users, the server’s License is not Free Software), you can “clone” the design from there “spyware development”. Openfire : Openfire is our choice because of many reasons. It has clear Apache Free Software compatible License.
Apache ActiveMQ : Comes with Apache License.
Apache Vysper : Comes with Apache License.
Citadel : Comes With GNU GPL License.
djabberd : Comes With GNU GPL License.
Other known messaging servers with Free Software License are ejabberd, in.jabberd, Metronome IM, MongooseIM, psyced, Vines, Wokkel etc.
