Reliance 3G USB Modem With OS X Yosemite

The App Shipped With Reliance 3G USB Modem Does Not Work With OS X Yosemite. Here is how to connect to the Internet using Network Settings. When this Reliance 3G USB Modem was written only God knows, may be in PowerPC age. Up to OS X Mavericks, it worked, with OS X Yosemite it will simply crash. Here is a guide for the users who has not much knowledge about hardware and softwares. This way is not flawless (ideally we should freshly configure), but it will work fine.

Reliance 3G USB Modem With OS X Yosemite : The Theoretical Part

3G USB Modem is a hardware. The software we use for connecting is a software that provides the Graphical User Interface to the Modem Manager daemon. In my case, it is manufactured by ZTE. I have a couple of the USB Modems. Fortunately, the firmware is supported.

Reliance 3G USB Modem With OS X Yosemite : Making it Working

If the Reliance 3G USB Modem App is installed, the network configuration is already done. When you will launch the App, it will crash. Let it get crushed. But, your Mac actually knows that it is a modem, it can dial to connect. Click the Apple Icon and then click “System Preferences…”. In System Preferences, you’ll find a globe named “Network”. Click it. Your device should be listed (with a name like ZTEUSBModem). Click select it. Only one field is not filled there – it is the phone number to dial. It will be *99#. Click Apply. There is an option named “Show Modem Status on Menu Bar”. Tick it and Apply. Now click the Option named “Advanced”. Go to “Proxies”. Tick the Option named “Auto Proxy Discovery”. Click OK. Click Apply.

Now click “Connect”. You’ll get connected. I am connected in this way, you should get connected too.

That Show Modem Status on Menu Bar option will show a received icon on the menu bare left to the battery, speaker icons. You can connect / disconnect from this place too.

If you can not connect, phone the Apple Shop’s guy and take your Mac to the Apple shop. They will do the setup for you. It is related to networking, it is normal for you not to know.

With this setup, you need to launch the App (see it to get crushed). Otherwise you’ll get various kind of errors. A daemon runs in the background with pppd to keep the connection with the device. You will need an universally working Modem Manager Application compatible with OS X Yosemite to send and receive message, see bandwidth usage etc. Ubuntu has a free App. I am also finding such one. App actually is running. When you’ll get disconnected, you will see the Reliance’s App’s prompt “Disconnected from PPP server…” with the crap GUI.

Practically software from any vendor will work. It will need a minute mod to make it of Reliance! If you know some other provider’s App (like of Verizon), which is stable on Yosemite and after installing it shows connected state, I can mod it. I am looking for a binary file to compile to make an universal App like Ubuntu. It is sad that OS X has no such universal App.

Update (03/06/2015) : We have found a usage meter app for calculation of bandwidth usage. This is a very small software but does the practical work.
