Hashtag : All About Hashtag
It is a kind of metadata tag. Social networking services such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest or Instagram supports Hashtag. Historically, Hashtag in messaging protocols based on IRC signal a topic to turn towards a conversation. Using pound or number sign is a way to label the information existed on services like IRC channels or Jaiku, but its usage has little to do with what is really done today on services like Twitter, which is where the hashtag has taken the definition themselves. The hash symbol was often used in information technology to highlight a special meaning. In 1970 for example, the hash symbol was used to denote immediate address mode in the assembly language of the PDP-11. In 1978, Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie used # in the C programming language for special keywords that had to be processed first by the C preprocessor.
However, since there was some consensus on their use; Chris Messina, an employee of Google, decided in 2007 to implement a way to link messages directly to Twitter and chosen to use this character. While it is true that, as the use that is given is completely different today. In July 2, 2009 Twitter began to hyperlink all hashtags in tweets to Twitter search results for the Hashtag-ged word and introduced Trending Topics.
