How Can I Take Better Pictures With My Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra?

The Galaxy S22 Ultra was a powerful phone with great cameras. However, the camera has been better in Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra with the updates. In S22 Ultra, you had to apply the updates and install a few Samsung apps to get all the features. However, a few tricks can get the most out of the features of the hardware and take great photos every time. By following these easy tips you can snap pictures that even than S22 Ultra. The sets are different and software probably more tweaked.

Tips To Capture Great Photos With Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

These common tricks are the same as was with Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. You have to make sure to activate the highest photo quality settings and no compression. This will ensure that the camera is taking pictures in the highest quality possible. You can find the settings in the camera app under ‘Settings’ :

  • Scene optimizer : OFF
  • Shot suggestions : ON
  • Scan QR codes: ON/OFF (your choice)
  • Swipe the Shutter button to Take burst photos/Create GIF (your choice)
  • Picture formats: Do not change the default settings
  • Save selfies as previewed: ON (flipping off)
  • Selfie colour tone : Check yourself
  • Video stabilization : ON
  • Advanced recording options > Zoom-in mic : ON; keep rest as default
  • Tracking auto-focus : ON
  • Grid lines : ON
  • Location tags: ON (probably a better idea to organize)
  • Shooting methods > Voice commands : ON

There are no other settings to change in the settings menu. Now, in the top menu, besides the settings gear icon:

  • Flash : OFF
  • Timer : OFF
  • Size : 3:4 (200MP) for normal photos, 3:4 for 100x zoom (like we need for moon photography)

Try to avoid using the flash whenever possible. The direct harsh light of flash will wash out the pictures and make them look less realistic and difficult to edit. The Galaxy S23 Ultra has some great features, such as HDR mode, panorama mode, astrophotography and time-lapse. These can help you take even more interesting pictures/videos.

If you need to use a flash, use a softbox, reflected light or some methods like this.

Both S22 Ultra and S23 Ultra offer a few nifty features, such as a remastering image option in Gallery, a standard photo editor and a measurement tool (Go to More > AR Zone > Quick Measure).

You have an option “Detail Enhancer” when you are at 200MP mode and zooming. This is a helpful feature to get more detailed photos. If you try to scan a document lying on a flat surface, you’ll get an on-screen bubble to level. The AI-driven scene optimizer is better to be kept off. It tends to oversaturate colours resulting in unnatural photos. Turn Off the Beauty Filter (Tap the Effects icon > Face tab, and set the filter’s intensity to 0).
Tap the Effects icon located (in the right corner of the top toolbar) > Color tone tab, and select Natural or Warm.

Install Samsung’s Expert RAW camera app from the Galaxy Store. With a tripod and astrophotography mode, you can shoot beautiful photos of the night sky. Tap Expert RAW mode, Tap the astrophotography star icon on the camera toolbar to get the astrophotography mode. You can enable the Star Guide to help you frame your shot of the night sky.

This is not the end of what Samsung packaged. Install the Samsung Good Lock app from the Galaxy Store. It is a module to install more features and enhancements. Camera Assistant is a Good Lock module that allows you to customize your camera settings and add new features. It was for S22 Ultra but it works on S23 Ultra as well. We’ll get the new version of this around October 2023.

Use the Pro Mode

If you want to take better pictures, as it was for Galaxy S22 Ultra, then you should make use of the Pro Mode. This mode gives you manual control over the various settings of your camera, such as the ISO, shutter speed, and exposure. By manually adjusting these settings, you can take much better pictures than you would be able to otherwise. You can read our article on exposure triangle.

Use a tripod

We have already mentioned it. If you want to take truly shake-free, sharp photos with your Galaxy S223 Ultra, then you need to use a tripod. A tripod will allow you to keep your camera completely still while you are taking the picture, which is essential for getting sharp and clear photos.

Use a remote shutter i.e. S Pen or Voice Command

Use the S Pen as a remote shutter. Get used to the offered features of S Pen. This will allow you to take pictures without having to press the button on your phone, which can cause shake and unsharp focus.

Shoot in RAW

Consider shooting in RAW format. RAW files are uncompressed and contain all of the data that your camera sensor captures. Here is the link to download the Samsung Expert RAW app from the Galaxy store :

You can edit the photos in Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Photoshop.

Taking Pictures in Low Light

You can use the Night Mode, this does help to reduce noise and blur. To use Night Mode, open the Camera app and tap on the Night Mode icon. Then, point the camera at your subject and tap the shutter button. The camera will take a series of pictures and then combine them into one final image.

Another tip for taking better pictures in low light is to use a tripod and Pro mode (or the Expert RAW app). A tripod will help to keep your camera steady, which will reduce blur in your pictures.

Overall, Night Mode and a tripod are both great ways to take better pictures in low light. Using these tips will help you get the best results from both Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and S23 Ultra.

Moon Photography

This is one of the most popular features of S22 Ultra and S23 Ultra. Use Auto Mode. Simply zoom to 60-70x and you will be able to view the typical form of the moon. Around 90x, you will get a usable quality image of the moon. By using a tripod and S Pen, you can get quite great photos of the moon.

Install some app which tells you the phases of the moon.

Invest Money in Adobe Photoshop

You can subscribe to Adobe Creative Cloud to use the full desktop versions of Adobe Lightroom & Adobe Photoshop for editing RAW images. There are zillions of actions and filters available all over the internet for Adobe Photoshop which can make the photos look like a pro.

Information About Today’s Camera Options

Samsung uses Sony’s optics for S22 Ultra and S23 Ultra. It is Sony IMX564 with 1.4µm pixels and a 13mm f/2.2 lens. The focus is fixed at infinity. You will get a similar character of imaging with the Sony Alpha 7R V mirrorless camera. But the cost of the camera body is more than 3 times. Additionally, each lens from Zeiss and Sony can cost the same as the price of S23 Ultra. iPhone uses Leica’s system (Leica & Panasonic have collaboration).

The Leica D-Lux 7 is a premium compact camera which costs less than $1200. I think it is far superior to iPhone. The Leica M10 costs 9 thousand dollars.

Conclusion

Whatever dedicated camera you own, you need a phone with a good camera from Samsung, Sony or Apple. S22 Ultra and S23 Ultra are cost-effective devices if you think about the list of hardware features.

A good tripod and a Face Tracking Gimbal can change mobile photography and videography. Use a protective case and always extend the warranty. S22 Ultra and S23 Ultra deliver a cost-effective solution for good photos on the go.
