Github is Under Pressure. Our analysis can show you how much Gitlab and RhodeCode bundled with OpenShift PaaS made them thoughtful. Github is a high priced closed source model for code hosting. The brilliant looking design does not worth the high value of the web interface for Git. Github is expecting a decline, an obvious decline is usage is assumed – the recent changes in Explore, attacking bylines towards long standing open source text editors to promote Atom text editor, allegation of sexual harassment (or kind of it) by an employee, the victim is wife of one of the owners of Github. With due respect to the victim, it is quite difficult to imagine.
Github is Under Pressure of Open Source Cloud Computing
Git is an open-source version control system started by Linus Torvalds. If you are not aware, Linus Torvalds is equivalent to Linux Kernel. We wrote before – Its SaaS that will be Rightly Killed in the context of only PRISM. Now HearBleed and PRISM came closer to perform a handshake. Github is a SaaS model that runs on Rackspace Dedicated hosting service. The Enterprise solution only provides the full software to be installed on own server.
Developers loved Github, without understanding the SaaS model. Unfortunately, Gitlab was suddenly “discovered”. Those who were able to afford a server, started experimenting with Gitlab. RhodeCode ( read Red Hat community developed code hosting software) made the situation worser.

Github is not Google Web Search, Google Plus, Pinterest or Twitter. Even if we exclude Facebook, the primary means to search for things by an ordinary user is Google Web Search. Gradually, Github started to distribute their stuffs for free as Open Source.
If you have some kind of Keyword research tool, you will astonished with the number of searches for Gitlab and RhodeCode. Searches with Gitlab was not so astonishing than for RhodeCode. People loves wordpress dot org (that is WordPress software) over wordpress dot com.
Github : Open Source Cloud Computing Softwares Stabbed It
Gitlab was the initial culprit. OpenStack was there for helping to stab with excellent API based functions for finer tuning of access to source codes. Chief Knife really stabbed – Rackspace has ready made Deployment option to create Gitlab Instance within few clicks.
Biggest hit was from Red Hat Open Shift with free PaaS and RhodeCode combo – the tool for managing Mercurial and GIT at free of cost.
Unfortunately, it is not the end of the story. Suddenly Digital Ocean appeared. At $5 / month a full IaaS. We are not calculating Amazon at all. GitHub offers private code hosting starting at $7/month for five repositories, up to $200/month for 125 repositories. The only hiccup is SSL certificate – unfortunately, there is pay per month options now for SSL certificates too.
Not to forget, developers has been more used with git with the advent of PaaS breed – from Heroku through AppFog to Red Hat OpenShift.
