Customize OS X 10.8.x Dock With Own Graphics : Steps

First thing is, where you will get the alternatives ? Answer is deviantArt. iDock, for example is such a group for resources :

Now click on your Dock’s Finder icon and go to Desktop for example. If you right click on the top of the window where the Desktop name and icon appears, you will get a menu, from that go to your Macintosh HD. Alternative ways are obviously there. Like clicking the Macintosh HD icon on Desktop, if you have.

You will see a folder named System (bears a pressed X mark on the folder). Double click and enter it. There will be one folder there, named Library. Open it. Inside Library, there will be a folder named CoreServices (again, bears a pressed X mark on the folder). Open it. It will take a small time to load. You will find an icon with the name Dock.

Alternate way to directly go to CoreServices folder is to right click on the Finder icon and click select the option that says “Go to Folder…” and copy paste the path :

Now right click on that Dock thing and click select the option “Show Package Contents”. A folder will show named Contents. Double click to open it. You will see a folder named Resources. You must copy paste this Resources folder somewhere. This is your backup.

Open the Resources folder and you will see lot of icons, png files etc. A normal person will obviously understand, your work is to name your resources with exact name with what you want to change with. You can either delete the original one in Resources folder (crude method) or can rename them individually, like from bottom5@2x.png to old.bottom5@2x.png (finer method).
