Candlelight Photography looks great but taking by a newbie or even by to some extent advanced is quite challenging as it demands higher knowledge and practice. Here are some tips on the requirements and the needed setup for your Candlelight Photography session. In most cases of Candlelight Photography, the model is spouse, it is more challenging in real than can be thought from technical aspect.
Candlelight Photography : The Beginning
Everything has some story behind. Today I noticed on Facebook, one of my junior has done a Candlelight Photography. Everything is new – wife, the DSLR camera and the Photographer’s skill. The end result became quite sad, far away than which can be expected from a DSLR. The exception is the model, despite the infamous history of lack of co-operativeness by the female series in every homes, she appeared quite cooperative with the photographer.
There are obvious such more persons who has issues with Candlelight Photography.

Candlelight Photography Tips
Few things are must :
- More candles than actually within the frame
- A good Tripod – we have extensive details on the head of the tripod. Head itself might work without the legs for closer photography.
- Keeping the ISO value to lower ?can be influenced by increasing the indirect reflected light as our prosumer grade DSLR never performs great at high ISO.
- Self-timer or a cable release
- A fast lens of lower focal length, preferably a prime lens
- Lens Hood

The basic problem is which low light. That simply means one needs to grasp low light photography nicely. Second is that, as increasing the ISO over 1600 creates the problem of getting noise, for created situations or rather arranged setup, we can use a kind of studio portrait setup. Obviously, so much luminance is not needed or will kill the desired yellowish tinge from a Candlelight Photograph, we have to reduce them. Extra Candles can be helpful to ‘focus’ the light on the face of the model, which will be out of the field, for example, beside the camera.
Lens hood will obviously help to get rid of the unwanted flares. As the aperture need to be kept open for a longer time; a tripod with or without the cable release helps enormously.
The last point is quite important. It is mandatory to keep the cotton swabs or facial tissues to mop up any kind of glittering fluid on the face of the model; for example, the model can start perspiration if the candles are closer. We need a kind of romantic, dreamy shot; a simple drop of perspiration can kill the mood in the Photography.
