Parallels Cloud Storage : Introduction by the company
On the occasion of the traditional annual Summit in Las Vegas, Birger Steen, CEO of Parallels presented a series of new products and launched the company’s strategies for 2013. Parallels Cloud Storage is a solution of convenient allocation on the virtual servers for small and medium-sized enterprises. It is a response to the increasing demand for data storage in the cloud : Steen said, as small and medium-sized enterprises are increasingly interested in using cloud computing as “all in one” solution, i.e. solutions that helps manage all the IT needs of business with the purchase of a single product, an important aspect of the hosting providers are now more than ever need to migrate to the offer of a bundle of products.
Parallels Cloud Storage : The Technology Behind
Parallels Cloud Storage is using the unused space on the disks of the production server to perform the file storage, a technique that already seen with OnApp, and easily integrated into existing installations. In fact, for the hosting provider, this will be a single component to update, without the need to provide a new infrastructure for both the hardware and software. Currently the product is already in use by the American provider ServInt.

The product is placed in fact behind the new Parallels Cloud Server, it is the company’s answer to VMware, Hyper-V and the creation of OpenStack cloud computing services for hosting providers, it is of shame that everything arrived too late and especially, it is still based on Parallels Containers without a support for opensource KVM and Xen Hypervisor. Cloud Storage is the add-on that allows you to pursue this strategy of “update”, but it is really hard to believe that most of the hosting provider may abandon Xen, VMware or KVM to switch to this solution. The choice will instead be required for those who have some Parallels Containers and looking for a way to revive the product. If all this had been presented just two years ago, it would probably have been received with great interest.
Parallels for several years continue to subsidize the focus on small and medium enterprises, but the competition will become more difficult with solutions such as Amazon AWS, OpenStack and a number of other vendors, including several start-ups, especially in terms of technological innovation.
