It is matter of fact, I personally have quite good number of audiophile grade devices.

So, the first thing is you hardware. If you do not have an audiophile pro grade output device like an EarPod (EarPod is recommended for lighter listening) or a good headphone or a certified  speaker system. You will get a list on store.apple.com to get an idea.

When you will really feel the need for an external interface interface for pro grade sound. If you are not an audiophile or lack knowledge on acoustic technology, go to the sound technology specific forums to directly ask them. The sound port on a MacBook Pro is optical out. Usually any apple audio device comes with a better DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) than those typical PC computer’s built in audio out. A MacBook Pro is manufactured for a premium user for professional usage. Sound is one of them ! Honestly, with the MacBook Pro default sound card, the only real difference we noticed was the latency drop for just listening, audio reproduction is bigger technology and acoustic engineers know better than us about that part.
