It is an image from our medical school’s hostel, where from I did my bachelor’s degree. The day I took it, it was raining. It was a gloomy day. Today Sun is on the sky, Sun is the biggest God – for Sun we are living, looking at Sun you can tell the approximate time. So the apparent absence of Sun on a Gloomy day is important technical limiting factor to make the Photo of better quality. We have used Windows version of Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended for this guide, I assumed that most can not carry the cost of buying a MacBook Pro or iMac. Adobe Photoshop itself a quite costly software.
Open the image first :
You can see the initial state of the photograph. There are lot of noises, lot of things those are creating a visual disturbances.
Duplicate the image as several layers and delete the locked layer. Save it in this condition somewhere in a different place with different name to avoid erroneous overwriting over the original. There is a function to duplicate image in PS, but I personally do not like it.
First do the minor adjustments for the brightness, contrast, tone and others either from the panels on the right side or from the menu :
Now, we will add some real bokeh effects, blur etc. Before going to that step, look at the picture now :
There will be difference in tone due to the fact, I edited on sRGB space on Windows, where Adobe added own color space. So basically I saw 50% color plus more Gamma compared to what I am viewing on this 15″ MacBook Pro (search for ICC profile in our website to learn more). Tolerate it.
So open the Lens Blur Tool :
I have used these settings for adding blur effects plus some bokeh :
To buy a prime L Lens of such spec, it would cost you few thousand dollars for only one focal length. It is basically difficult to tell whether it was taken by a top notch digital camera or just an ordinary mobile camera.
So it will basically sit on the other old layers like a ‘film’ making the whole image blurred. There are many ways to remove the blurred area specifically, like using eraser tool artistically with applied knowledge of optics :
Merge all the layers after editing. Again duplicate layers. At this stage the image is looking like this :
Add filter and adjust it :
Now we will add lighting effect :
I am quite sorry for the fact that, I forgot to take an screenshot showing you the basic idea – the light should fall using the spotlight tool at the same direction Sun was. And blend the layer properly :
