Microsoft OneNote is one software for organizing notes. This software from Microsoft is distributed in different functions for Android, iOS, macOS and Windows. Evernote is an online service and associated software that supports collecting, organizing, and finding notes, documents, and photos in various formats.
What is about Evernote?
Evernote is a web-based note-taking service that allows you to record notes on your computer and on the go. In addition to the web editor that runs in the browser, there are apps for some operating systems. Through plug-ins, the software can be used from web browsers and e-mail programs. The user can save notes, graphics or documents via various sources (PC, Internet, e-mail). Evernote sorts the objects and makes them available to the user in various sorts, for example chronologically, by tags or titles. In addition, all objects are indexed for the search functions. Text recognition, which recognizes manuscripts to a certain extent, captures recognized text content from scanned or photographed objects so that it is also possible to search for image-captured text content. Evernote offers the ability to edit objects, send them as an email, and share them with other users.
Evernote can also be used as a to-do list by offering the creation of tickable lists and defining entire notes as tasks. With a reminder function, you can be reminded of a note on a specific date. The notes are saved in a proprietary format that can be exported as a file from within the desktop software. Among other things, the notes can be saved in HTML and thus transferred to an open format.
---
Evernote is distributed in the freemium model, so using a basic account is free. A note may only have a maximum of 25 megabytes and the monthly upload limit is 60 megabytes. The premium account costs $5 per month or $45 per year. Evernote Premium offers, among other things, 10 GB of monthly upload with a maximum of 200 MB per note, more options for exchanging information, a full-text search in PDF documents, and a presentation mode.
What is about OneNote?
Microsoft advertised that with OneNote electronic notes can be ordered and easily retrieved. The OneNote “notepad” is organized into sections with subsections, each of which can contain multiple pages. Within a page, the page elements can be moved. Text can not only be typed in but also entered by hand with a tablet PC. OneNote integrates with various Microsoft Office programs, making it easy to take notes, e.g. in Microsoft Word, or contact information in Microsoft Outlook from OneNote. To give its design a notebook feel, there is an option to turn on rule lines.
Notes can be linked to each other. Inserted content is automatically linked to its origin. For example, inserted text sections from web pages are automatically provided with the corresponding URL. OneNote can store images, video files, and text. Thanks to the integrated text and speech recognition, texts in inserted images (e.g. screenshots) and language files (dictations) can be searched for keywords.
“Collections” in OneNote 2016 from the Office package consist of a file and folder structure that can be stored on local disks and network shares. The latter allows joint editing with other users or access from different devices. In addition – under macOS only – “notebooks” can also be stored on SharePoint and in Microsoft’s cloud service OneDrive, which also allows editing with several participants and the synchronization of content via different devices of all supported platforms.
OneNote can integrate with Zapier, IFTTT, Trello, Monday.com or Asana.
Conclusion
The cost of Evernote is too much. $44.95 a year today is so huge, if someone asks us which to use, we would always recommend OneNote over Evernote; both are quite similar as to not make much difference. And there are professional tools for advanced works including project management.
