List of SMD Basic Electronic Components

In our previous article, we talked about the necessary basic electronic components. If you are a new user, you should buy and use them for using on breadboard or prototyping board. Normally We Use Those Through-Hole Components For DIY Electronics. We explained in other article around how to design one layer PCB at home and also listed the PCB designing softwares. In case you order to get multilayer (you can use single layer PCB too) PCB, you can use the components used for surface mount technology. SMD takes lesser space. Here is a List of SMD Basic Electronic Components. Modern technology today is made with SMD components. You can solder a circuit with SMD components by baking it in an reflow oven or may be able to solder some components.

SMT stands for Surface Mount Technology and SMD for Surface Mount Device. Technically, we should not say SMD Basic Electronic Components. However, SMD is used name by the technicians and sold with such name. SMD Basic Electronic Components which are so called passive rectangular components – resistors, capacitors follow sizes of SMD components conform to the industry standards. Many of the sizes of SMD components follow JEDEC specifications. Standards enable PCB design to become simplified. Different SMT packages can be categorised by the type of components. Standard components such as resistors, capacitors come in sizes that are mentioned with numbers like 1206 or 0805.

As first time user for soldering the components, 1206 packages are fairly easy to solder.

  • The size 1206 translates to the dimension of 3.0 x 1.5 in mm or 0.12 x 0.06 in inches.
  • The size 0201 translates to the dimension of 0.6 x 0.3 in mm or 0.02 x 0.01 in inches.

So from the above, we knew about SMD capacitors and SMD resistors, we will buy 1206 SMD resistors. You can perform web search with 1206 SMD resistor to get an idea about price. 1206 SMD capacitor is multilayer ceramic SMD capacitor, more superior is Tantalum SMD capacitors with sizes A to E. Size A closest to the dimension of 1206. You can perform search with SMD capacitor to get a practical idea about price. SMD resistors, SMD capacitors also sold as kit with mixed values – which are practical to buy.

Next important components are SMD transistors, SMD diodes, SMD LED. These components usually housed in a small plastic package and connections are made via leads from the package.
